Labiaplasty - Frequently Asked Questions.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that will reduce the size, and/or reshape the labia minora. The labia minora are the inner labia, or lips of the vagina, and are situated between the outer labia and the vaginal opening. In women of reproductive age, there are considerable variations in the size of the labia minora. Women with large labia minora can in some instances experience pain during intercourse, or feel discomfort during everyday activities, especially when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Other women may feel embarrassed by their outward appearance. The purpose of Labiaplasty is to improve the external appearance of the vagina. After the procedure, most women have less discomfort during intercourse, feel more positive about their appearance and show overall improvement in their self-esteem.
Who is Labiaplasty For?
Labiaplasty is for women who have an enlargement of the labia that causes discomfort during sexual intercourse, discomfort with tight clothing, or irritation or skin rashes. Often patients are embarrassed about the size and shape of their labia which can result in self-esteem issues and/or interfere with sexual gratification.
During Labiaplasty, Dr Goldman can correct tears and deformities that occur during childbirth. Often patients request that their left and right labia be the same shape and size which is all part of the Labiaplasty procedure when performed by Dr Goldman.
The Labiaplasty Procedure
Dr Goldman only does labiaplasty under full general anaesthetic. Labiaplasty involves very small incisions that allow excess tissue to be removed, and allows a visually pleasing shape to be created with the labia. The incisions are made within natural folds and creases so that, in time, scarring will be almost impossible to detect. The sutures used are dissolvable and therefore will not need to be removed.
The procedure itself generally takes between 1 to 2 hours and requires a general anaesthetic. As an experienced Specialist Surgeon, Dr Goldman only performs Labiaplasty at a fully accredited hospital where patient care can be delivered at the highest level.
Can I Go Home After The Procedure?
Yes. Patients are able to return home after the procedure. Dr Goldman will provide after-care instructions. You will be able to resume normal light activities within 1-2 days and you are able to shower the day after surgery.
Is There Pain During The Recovery For Labiaplasty?
Pain and discomfort should be minimal during recovery and should not last more than 2 or 3 days after the procedure. We will ensure that you have adequate pain medication, but we find overall that our patients cope very well and the procedure is well tolerated.
How Soon Can I Go Back To Work?
On average after a Labiaplasty procedure, most patients are back to work within 3 to 7 days.
When Can I Resume Sexual Intercourse?
As with any type of surgical procedure, there is usually a period of time needed for the body to heal. As a guideline, you should refrain from any type of sexual intercourse for a period between 4-6 weeks.
How Long Before I Can Expect A Final Result?
This varies from patient to patient and on the extent of the Labiaplasty surgery. Some people bruise easily, while others don’t. Generally there will be swelling and some bruising after surgery. Both will usually disappear over a week or two. The final optimal result can usually be appreciated within a few months after surgery.
Probably the most important thing that a patient can expect from the surgery is an increase in confidence and self-esteem. Most patients who have undertaken Labiaplasty report that their comfort is significantly improved in regard to sexual relations and in regard to physical activities or the wearing of certain clothing styles such as tight pants.
What Are The Risks and Complications?
As with any surgery there are certain risks. The most common risks include bleeding, infection and scarring. Although these events are usually infrequent, they sometimes can occur. Dr Goldman is an extremely experienced Surgeon and is dedicated to minimising all risks for his patients, including scarring. At your consultation, Dr Goldman will discuss the associated risks along with specific aftercare strategies to ensure the best result is achieved from your surgery. It is also important to mention here that Dr Goldman insists that his Labiaplasty procedures be carried out at a fully accredited hospital, as opposed to a Doctor’s rooms or minor surgery facility. This ensures that all potential risks are minimised.
Does Health Insurance Cover This Procedure?
Labiaplasty is mainly considered an elective procedure and insurance plans don't generally cover it. But there are exceptions than can be evaluated on a case by case basis. Some Labiaplasty procedures (these will be functional circumstances rather than aesthetic) may be covered by health insurance, in part or in full, depending upon your health insurance policy and each patient’s circumstances. Please check with your health insurance provider concerning your own eligibility.
